Looking to The Future of Biodiesel

Future Research

  • One problem with biodiesel is that, at low temperatures, it will not move smoothly through fuel lines and into the engine.  This is the “pour problem”.  The heating oil in the engine needs to be at a lower temperature than the biodiesel, so more oil is burned than fuel.  Currently, biodiesel is mixed with small amounts of heating oil to fix this, but more research is being done to solve this problem entirely.
  • Biodiesel is currently undergoing research to prove its uses in turbines to make energy.  As of now the oil is too thick to power any large turbines.

Concerns

  • Very few stations sell biodiesel.
  • Increased nitrous oxide emissions may contribute to smog levels.
  • Does not lower hydrocarbon levels in engine.
  • Production can release harmful gases if chemicals are mixed improperly.
  • Thickens into s solid at cold temperatures (see above).
  • Must be stored at 75ºF and needs to be heated regularly, making transportation difficuclt.
